Ms Penny Williams, High Commissioner to Malaysia
The Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, HE Penny Williams, will give a public lecture on the current economic and political status of Malaysia and the Australia-Malaysia relationship.

Ms Williams will comment on the economic and political situation in Malaysia, which is undergoing significant change. Changes include Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi stepping down from his position as Prime Minister to be succeeded by his Deputy, Najib Abdul Razak and a resurgent opposition, led by the former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Ms Williams will discuss the broad relationship between Australia and Malaysia, which extends beyond trade and investment to include tourism, education, defence, counter-terrorism and law enforcement. Malaysia is an important economic partner and regional neighbour for Australia. It ranks as our third largest trading partner in ASEAN and our eleventh largest trading partner overall.

Ms Williams will also talk briefly about the recently launched book – Endeavors of Excellence – that highlights the lives of outstanding Malaysian scholars, their achievements and contributions. More than 250,000 private students from Malaysia completed their tertiary education in Australia. In 2007, 180, 000 tertiary students were enrolled in Australian programs in Malaysia. The book celebrates these scholars who make a huge impact not just on Malaysia, but also on their host country, Australia.
