CHINA: Messages from an Unknown Chinese Mother: the lives of women in contemporary China.

Asialink and Readings invite you to join one of the world's most extraordinary journalists and feminists, in conversation about the realities of life for women in China. Xinran will be hosted by Associate Professor Anne Mclaren, on the subject of her latest book Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother. Message is a collection of real life tales, as told by Chinese woman, who have had to abandon their babies for social, political and historical reasons.

Xinran is a Chinese-English author and journalist, currently living in England and writing for The Guardian. She worked as a journalist for decades in China, where her radio program became a focal point for ordinary Chinese to tell their stories. She has published six books which have been translated into 30 languages. Her work draws on oral history, interviews and extensive research to illustrate the complexity of life in China for women of all generations.  See recent media article (February 13, 2010, "Family matters", Linda Morris, The Age online)

Anne McLaren is Associate Professor at the Asia Institute, University of Melbourne. She has researched and published widely on subjects including Chinese popular culture, oral and print traditions, and Chinese gender issues. Her books include Chinese Women: Working and Living; Dress, Sex & Text: the Culture of Chinese Women; and The Chinese Femme Fatale: Stories from the Ming Period.
