The ASEAN Charter was initiated in Bali, Indonesia in October 2003 when ASEAN countries signed the Declaration of ASEAN Concord II to establish an ASEAN Community by year 2020.

The ASEAN Community will be based on three main pillars: Security, Economic and Socio-cultural Community while continuing to be the primary driving force for regional architecture such as ASEAN + 3 initiative, ASEAN and Dialogue Partners initiative and ASEAN Regional Forum initiative.

Mr Dian Triansyah Djani will be sharing his views on how to navigate this long continuing journey, and identify the challenges along the way. His experience as the Indonesian Representative in the drafting the Charter, as part of the High Level Task Force, offers us a truly insightful perspective into the making of the Charter.

Since 2005, Mr Djani has held the position of Director General ASEAN – Indonesia, prior to which he served as Director of ASEAN Economic Cooperation. To numerous forums in regional and multilateral level, he has led multiple delegations to ASEAN and APEC meetings as well as WTO negotiations. He is a founder of Indonesia’s WTO Forum and publisher of “Sekilas WTO”, a noted publication on WTO issues.

Following Mr Djani’s address, Professor Anthony Milner will deliver a response. He is an Asialink Professorial Fellow and Basham Professor of Asian History at Australia National University. Professor Milner is a member of both Australia Malaysia Institute and Australia Thailand Institute and a key thinker on the concepts of regionalism and their impact on Australia’s relations in the region.

This event is co-organised by the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne and Asialink at The University of Melbourne.
