Jitish Kallat Circa 2011 (installation detail) Resin and coir rope Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Bombay
The utopian idea of Lemuria is an imaginary, submerged landscape hugging the shoreline between Australia and India. This hypothetical ‘lost land’ is the perfect framework for exploring the cultural entanglement of our relationship.
The forum explores insights by leading cultural theorists, artists, curators and writers from Australia and India who examine the complexities of working cross-regionally while speculating on a recovered continent. Like lemurs, many of us who occupy spaces within the arts hug the shorelines of landmasses of cultures, especially in the Asia–Pacific region. How can we explore the shorelines of all our practices?
Chaired by Natalie King (director of Utopia @ Asialink) and Bala Starr (senior curator, the Ian Potter Museum of Art), this forum examines the complexities of working cross-regionally.
