Asialink is delighted to announce the Launch of the Australia Myanmar Business Taskforce
The Australia Myanmar Business Taskforce is an initiative of Asialink that assists Australian businesses to establish closer economic co-operation between Australia and Myanmar at this historic juncture in Myanmar’s national history.
Taskforce members have exclusive access to the latest information on commercial opportunities in Myanmar, business missions to Myanmar, prompt trade and investment advice and regular briefings and issue updates. The Taskforce will help position Australia to participate in the opportunities that emerge as Myanmar develops and will aim to have a significant positive impact on the development of local capacity within Myanmar.
The Business Taskforce will be guided by Australia’s pre-eminent expert on the Myanmar economy, Associate Professor Sean Turnell.
Myanmar is currently implementing extensive and historic reforms, with policy changes spanning the economic, agricultural, health and education sectors. The ruling junta, in place since 1962, was officially dissolved in 2011 following a 2010 general election. Government spokespeople state consistently that the political will is very strong and there is no turning back now. While barriers to increased trade and investment remain, the potential for mutual gain from commercial partnerships between Australia and Myanmar is substantial.
Asialink’s establishment of the Taskforce follows the success of the Asialink Conversations held in Yangon in January 2012, the Asialink Business Mission in May 2012 and, in September 2012, the hosting in Sydney and Melbourne of a high-level Parliamentary delegation from Myanmar led by the Speaker of the Lower House The Hon Thura U Shwe Mann.
