Asialink host the Melbourne launch of Asian Treasures: Gems of the Written Word by Andrew Gosling on Tuesday 28th February 2012 at 6:30pm.

Asian Treasures: Gems of the Written Word is a stunning showcase of Asian works of art, calligraphy and texts of historical and religious significance that are housed in the National Library of Australia.

With beautiful colour reproductions throughout, the publication features over 40 highlights from the Library’s collection, including the Library’s oldest publication, Greater Sutra of the Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom, dated 1162, an Indian Sanskrit text translated by the Chinese monk Xuanzang, known in fiction as Tripitaka and accompanied by his faithful companions Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy.

Professor David Walker will be launching Asian Treasures: Gems of the Written Word.  David Walker is Professor of Australian Studies at Deakin University and is currently researching Australian perceptions of Asia from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The first of three volumes on this subject was published in 1999 as Anxious Nation: Australia and the Rise of Asia, 1850-1939. His latest book, Not Dark Yet, a personal, family and cultural history, appeared first in 2011.

The author, Andrew Gosling worked at the National Library of Australia for 30 years, acquiring an unequalled knowledge of the subject. In Asian Treasures, he provides thoroughly researched insights into the provenance and significance of the unique items in the National Library of Australia’s Asian Collection.  He has also written Jessie’s Korea: Guide to the McLaren-Human Collection at the National Library of Australia (2007).

Asian Treasures: Gems of the Written Word will be on sale at the launch and Andrew Gosling will be available for book signing.
